“Simply Seating” Intermediate Level Seminar In this seminar, the overall seating process will be reviewed briefly. The child, adult and aged populations will be discussed with regard to skeletal development & deteriation, structural deformities, motor & sensory development & deteriation, skin, and other issues pertinent to seating. The benefits of early, independent mobility will be discussed in the context of neuroplasticity. Ergonomic fit of a manual wheelchair for effective propulsion & reduction of injury will be discussed, as well as, certain frame characteristics. Appropriate application of Freedom Design products will be demonstrated in case studies throughout the seminar. Diagnoses such as, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, arthrogryposis, TBI, CVA, amputation, osteoporosis and arthritis will be addressed. Lecture, case studies, research, and video will aide in the presentation. Objectives: The participant will: 1. Become familiar with the evaluation process for a seating system 2. Be exposed to normal skeletal development in the young child, orthopedic issues that can occur in the neurologically impaired child, as well as deteriation in the older population 3. Be exposed to skeletal abnormalities of the pelvis, spine and extremities and seating options to address them. 4. Become familiar with postural components and their impact on function, as well as how certain seating choices can impact and improve postural control. Also the participant will be exposed to postural differences in the young child, neurologically involved client and geriatrics patient. a. musculoskeletal, b. neuromotor status, c. movement strategies, d sensory systems 5. Be exposed to pressure wound identification, causes, and considerations for seating a client effectively. 6. Become aware of the importance of early mobility (12-15 months) for the non functional client and the numerous positives, as well as negative repercussions if it does not occur. 7. Neuroplasticity will be discussed with regard to early intervention, specifically independent mobility in a chair and muscle reeducation through seating choices. 8. Be exposed to research on wheelchair set up for efficiency and reduction of injury. 9. Be exposed to the 4 propulsion patterns and which is most effective. 10. Consider frame choice and set up for child, adult and geriatrics use. 11. Be exposed to Freedom Designs equipment and proper application/ specification of equipment Lecture, case studies, research and possibly video will be used during the presentation. Several diagnoses will be discussed throughout the seminar, including CP, Spina Bifida, Muscular Dystrophy, CVA, Osteoporosis, Arthritis, SCI, SMA.
