The Ergonomics and Biomechanics of Wheelchair Seating: From Identification to  
Intervention

Course Description: This course will cover the ergonomic and biomechanical  
factors influencing the human body in a wheelchair. Particular emphasis will  
be placed on identifying and using objective measures to determine how these  
factors affect the spine and pelvis. We will discuss the management and  
prevention of pathologies including spinal and pelvic deformities, wounds and  
UE overuse pathologies through proper positioning. Selecting and adjusting  
wheelchair parameters and seating applications to optimize positioning and  
function while decreasing the secondary, multi-system effects of prolonged  
wheelchair use. A thorough mat assessment will be performed and case  
presentation of various diagnostic groups will be utilized to illustrate the  
principals of the discussion.
