Medical Justification for Powered Mobility and Power Seat Functions in
Bariatric Adults and Medically Compromised Individuals

Instructor: Jenny Lieberman, MS OTR/L, ATP - Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, NY

Level: Intermediate Seating & Positioning course
Duration and Credits: 6 Hours - 0.6 CEUs and 6 CECs
Course description: Identification of and justification for powered mobility
and power seating is based upon medical presentation and client symptoms. The
focus of this course will be on the Bariatric population, as well as medically
compromised clientele. The use of powered mobility in Bariatrics is often
controversial. A review of the literature, combined with case presentations,
will provide argument in support of this based on individual medical needs.
Additionally, the medically compromised individual is often overlooked for
powered seating, which is often medically necessary. Research will be used to
support justification of powered seating with this population, depending on
the client’s presentation. Similarly, case presentation will be used to
support provision.
